The periodic table is organized numerically by the number of protons that are inside the elements atom. Nickel has 28 protons making it the 28th element on the periodic table. Since there are 28 protons, and 31 neutrons in the nucleus, there are also 28 electrons in the atom in 4 electron rings (2 electrons in the first ring, 8 electrons in the second and third ring, and 2 electrons in the fourth ring.)
